Waffle towels: what makes them different?

Waffle towels: what makes them different?

Waffle towels feel different from the traditional towels most of us know. They are lighter, thinner and take up less space, yet still absorb water well.

Their biggest advantage: they dry quickly.

That combination makes them particularly practical for everyday showers, travel, the gym, the beach or simply anyone who prefers a towel that does not stay damp for hours. So what makes waffle towels work differently?

Waffle towel

What is a waffle towel?

The name comes from the distinctive woven texture. Instead of the raised cotton loops found on traditional terry towels, waffle towels have a textured grid woven directly into the fabric.

This structure creates plenty of surface area for absorbing moisture while leaving more room for air to circulate through the fabric. The result is a towel that can absorb water effectively without needing to be thick or heavy. It also means less bulk.

Waffle towels take up less room in the bathroom cupboard, beach bag or suitcase, which makes them especially useful when space matters.

Waffle vs Terry towel

Waffle or terry: what's the difference?

Both have their place. It mostly comes down to what you like from a towel. Terry towels feel fuller, fluffier and more plush against the skin. If you love wrapping yourself in a thick towel after a shower, that familiar terry texture is difficult to beat.

Waffle towels offer a different experience. They are lighter, less bulky and quicker to dry, making them particularly practical for everyday use and easy to take with you.

You do not necessarily have to choose between the two. A plush terry towel can be perfect after a long shower, while a waffle towel might be the one you reach for when packing for the beach, heading to the gym or simply wanting something that will dry faster between uses.

Why we chose a finer waffle weave

Not every waffle towel is made the same way. Many lightweight versions use large, relatively loose squares.

For our Organic Waffle Towels, we wanted to keep the qualities people love about waffle fabric while giving the towel a little more substance. We chose a fine, tightly woven waffle structure and a weight of 420 GSM. It gives the towel a denser feel in your hands while maintaining the breathability and quick-drying performance of waffle weave. The finer construction also gives the fabric a cleaner look and helps it hold its shape through regular washing and use.

Waffle towels get softer with use

If you are used to fluffy terry, a waffle towel may feel different when you first pick it up. Give it a little time. Cotton waffle fabric naturally relaxes and becomes softer with washing and use while keeping its characteristic texture. It is one of those materials that gets better once it becomes part of your everyday routine.

We recommend washing your towel before its first use and skipping fabric softener. Fabric softener can leave a coating on cotton fibres, which may reduce their natural absorbency.

From the bathroom to the beach

One of the best things about a lighter towel is how easy it is to take with you. Waffle towels work just as well after a morning shower as they do at the gym, by the pool or packed into a beach bag. Even the largest size folds down without taking up nearly as much space as a thick towel.

Our Organic Waffle Towels come in three sizes:

  • 50 x 100 cm
  • 70 x 140 cm
  • 100 x 150 cm

Instead of following seasonal trends, we chose shades designed to live together and stay relevant for years: VanillaTerraMintPistachio and Cocoa.

Mix them, match them or stick to one colour throughout the bathroom.
