Orthopaedic Pillow for Neck Support: What Makes NeckProtect® Different?
The Centa-Star NeckProtect® is an orthopaedic cervical support pillow designed for people who want better neck support while sleeping on their back or side.
It is also a pillow I have genuinely fallen for.
I’m Jurgita, the founder of Bedroommood. Bedding is my work, my passion and a big part of my everyday life.
I have opinions about fabric density, down fill power, filling weights, stitching and construction. When it comes to bedding, I know what to look for and what questions to ask.
We work with Häussling, a large and well-established German bedding company from which we source down duvets and pillows. Bedroommood also works with its subsidiary F.A.N., which produces hypoallergenic duvets, pillows, wool duvets and mattresses.
Centa-Star is part of the same group and specialises in innovative duvets and pillows. NeckProtect® is the first Centa-Star product we are introducing, but I doubt it will be the last. Their side sleeper pillow has already caught my attention too. :)
I first discovered NeckProtect® at the Heimtextil trade fair.
While discussing our annual order with Häussling, we mentioned that we had been looking for a high-quality ergonomic pillow with proper cervical support.
Their answer was immediate:
“Centa-Star.”
It was at the same stand, just with a different representative and on a different shelf. Sometimes the thing you are looking for is already close. You simply have to ask.
The first thing that caught my eye was not the shape or the colour.
It was the fabric.
The surface had tiny wave-like details, almost like an engraving. It was obvious they were not there by accident. I had never seen a memory foam pillow cover like it.
Then I pressed the pillow.
The foam slowly returned to its original shape. Calmly, steadily, without rushing. Almost like breathing.
My first thought was: this pillow will remember me.
I was as excited as if I had found my dream handbag. :) I simply stood there smiling.
What is an orthopaedic cervical support pillow?
An orthopaedic pillow is designed to support the natural position of the head, neck and cervical spine during sleep.
Unlike a standard pillow, a cervical support pillow is shaped to distribute pressure more evenly and help keep the neck in a more stable position. This can be especially important for people who sleep on their back or side, wake up with neck tension or find that standard pillows feel too high, too low or too unstable.
NeckProtect® was developed specifically around the anatomy of the cervical spine. That is what makes it different from a typical memory foam pillow.
Three things that make NeckProtect® special
1. It was developed by a doctor, not a designer
The NeckProtect® story begins with Boris Biebl, founder of ChiroCenter Bottrop and one of the few specialists in Germany combining original American chiropractic methods with neurochiropractic care.
In 2013, he developed the first version of an anatomically shaped cervical support pillow.
Two international patents followed in 2016 and 2017. Later, a collaboration with Centa-Star turned NeckProtect® into a pillow people could use at home.
This was not created as a styling exercise or a clever marketing concept. It came from years of observing where people experience neck discomfort, how the head rests during sleep and why certain sleeping positions create pressure.
Orthopaedic specialist Dr Thorsten Rarreck, former club doctor for FC Schalke 04, has described it as a pillow that meets medical and orthopaedic requirements for neck support while sleeping on both the back and side.
NeckProtect® is also:
OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified recommended by the German Chiropractors’ Association made in Germany
2. The double contour supports different areas of the neck
The cervical spine consists of seven vertebrae, known as C1 to C7.
Each area has slightly different support needs. Some parts benefit from firmer support, while others need more space and pressure relief.
Most standard orthopaedic pillows use one simple raised contour.
NeckProtect® uses a more considered double-contour shape. The highest support point sits around the lower cervical vertebrae, C5 and C6. At the same time, the shape helps reduce pressure around the upper cervical area, including C1 and C2, also known as the atlas and axis.
For side sleepers, the design also considers pressure around the ear and jaw. The result is a more stable sleeping position, whether you sleep on your back or side.
Night is when the body gets a chance to recover from everything the day asks of it. A well-shaped cervical pillow cannot replace medical treatment, but it can support a more natural and consistent sleeping position.
3. It comes in two different firmness and memory options
At BedroomMood, NeckProtect® is available in two versions.
NeckProtect® Softness
Softness has a stronger memory foam effect and adapts more slowly to the shape of the head and neck. The foam follows the body’s contours gradually and precisely. It feels deep, calm and supportive. This is the version I chose. It is a good option for people who enjoy the slow, cocooning feel of traditional memory foam.
NeckProtect® Ultra
Ultra has a lighter memory effect and returns to its original shape more quickly. It feels more responsive and slightly less enveloping than Softness. This makes it a versatile choice for anyone new to orthopaedic pillows or still figuring out what kind of neck support feels best. It offers a balance between stability and faster movement.
Both versions have the same cover, made from:
74% lyocell
25% polyester
1% elastane
The cover has a distinctive wave-like structure and can be washed at up to 40°C.
Is NeckProtect® suitable for side sleepers?
Yes. NeckProtect® is designed to support both side sleepers and back sleepers. When sleeping on your side, the space between the shoulder, neck and head needs to be supported without forcing the neck upwards or allowing the head to drop too far down. The pillow’s shape helps stabilise the head while also considering pressure around the ear and jaw.
This can make it a good option for people searching for:
- an orthopaedic pillow for side sleeping
- a cervical pillow for neck support
- a memory foam pillow for side and back sleepers
- a pillow that helps keep the head stable
- a pillow for morning neck tension
I have been sleeping on NeckProtect® for two months.
And although I have always been a devoted down pillow person, I am still using this anatomical pillow and have no plans to switch back.
It keeps my sleeping position more stable. I move less, my head does not slide around as much and I wake up feeling like my neck and shoulders have had a calmer night.
It won me over.
The fabric also deserves its own mention. Those waves were the first thing I noticed, and the first time I held the pillow, I could not stop touching them.
This is not a basic memory foam cover. You can immediately feel that detail and construction mattered more than simply making it as cheaply as possible. When I pressed the pillow and watched it slowly rise back into shape, I thought it looked almost like a robot waiting for a signal so it could begin helping me relax.
Every morning, my neck feels free and my shoulders feel less tense.
Can an orthopaedic pillow help prevent sleep creases?
There is another benefit we rarely talk about: facial pressure during sleep. When a pillow does not keep the head stable, the face can slide and remain pressed into the fabric for hours, especially when sleeping on the side.
NeckProtect® helps hold the head in a more stable position from both sides.
Less tilting. Less sliding. Less pressure against the cheeks. It is not a beauty trick. It is simply geometry.
Who may benefit from a cervical support pillow?
I often hear the same questions from customers.
“I already sleep on an orthopaedic pillow, but you did not have one.”
Now we do.
“Every pillow makes my neck hurt.”
That is exactly why we chose to introduce this cervical support pillow.
“I sleep perfectly well on a down pillow.”
Great. Not everyone needs to change their pillow. But if you regularly wake up with neck stiffness, shoulder tension or the feeling that your head was not properly supported, NeckProtect® may be worth trying.
A cervical pillow may be especially useful for people who:
- sleep on their back or side
- prefer structured support
- wake up with neck or shoulder tension
- feel that traditional pillows lose their shape
- want a more stable sleeping position
- enjoy memory foam but need more precise support
A pillow built around function, not decoration
NeckProtect® is not a romantic product.
It probably will not become the prettiest detail in your bedroom, and it may not create the same instant excitement as a new bedding set.
For me, it represents something else. Mastery.
The layers, the shape, the technology, the medical knowledge and the years of development all exist for one simple reason: to support the body while it rests.
Sleep matters. And sometimes being good in bed starts with choosing a pillow that actually knows what it is doing.
If an orthopaedic cervical support pillow is what your sleep has been missing, NeckProtect® is now available at Bedroommood.
