How to correctly wash bedding?

How to correctly wash bedding?

Let’s start by answering the most common question: should you wash new, freshly unpacked bedding?

The correct answer is yes – but I personally never do :)

That’s because the fabric arrives clean and neatly packaged, and the sewing studio maintains impeccable cleanliness. At our office, Simona is very strict about keeping everything in order - not even a speck of dust lands on the product. I don’t wash it, I enjoy that brand-new feeling. But, of course, I’m only speaking about our Bedroommood bedding.

Prep your laundry the right way

You should only wash bedding together if it’s the same color or at least similar in tone. Never mix white bedding with colored fabrics. Also, try to avoid washing it with other items like clothes or towels. Chances are, your clothes will shed lint – and you’ll end up annoyed.

Before putting your bedding into the washing machine, turn it inside out and give it a good shake. This will help remove any dust, hair, or lint that may have built up. This way, you’ll protect not only the bedding itself but also your washing machine.

Make sure all zippers and buttons are closed. If you leave a duvet cover unzipped, it’ll grab onto everything else in the wash, and nothing will come out clean.

The more natural the detergent, the better

Strong detergents with bleach can give the false impression that they clean better, but they don’t actually protect the fabric. After just a few washes, you may notice your bedding losing its natural sheen and strength. Choose liquid, eco-friendly detergents without bleach – this will help preserve the beautiful qualities of sateen and percale for much longer.

Laundry hack

Use Vinegar and baking soda. These wonderful household staples are worth keeping in your laundry cupboard.

Pour vinegar into the detergent drawer and sprinkle baking soda directly into the drum. Use them alongside your regular detergent. This combo helps to naturally disinfect your bedding - getting rid of bacteria and lingering odours.

If your bedding has stubborn oily stains: from body oils, hair products, or lubricants, and regular washing doesn’t help, try using eco-friendly dish soap. Apply a small amount directly to the stains before placing the bedding in the washing machine.

Wash at a higher temperature with a rinse cycle. The stains should come right out.

Drying

If possible, it’s best to let your bedding air dry naturally. Give it a good shake before hanging to help prevent wrinkles.

If you’re using a dryer, choose a low temperature setting and take the bedding out as soon as the cycle ends to keep it smooth.

To iron or not to iron?

Percale – no

Sateen – yes

Not everyone enjoys ironing, and that’s where percale really shines – its charm lies in its naturally relaxed wrinkles, so neatly folding your bedding after it’s dry is more than enough.

However, we do recommend ironing sateen bedding. It refreshes the fabric, bringing out its signature smoothness and subtle shine.

Laundry hack

Store clean bedding in a way that lets the fabric breathe. Never place it in boxes or plastic bags – especially if it’s even slightly damp – as this can cause yellowing or even mildew over time.

Always read the care label

The care label on your bedding will show the maximum recommended washing temperature - usually 40 °C (104 °F). Avoid exceeding it, as higher temperatures can damage the soft cotton, whether it’s sateen or percale.

It’s also important not to overload the washing machine - bedding needs space to move freely during the wash. Always choose a gentle cycle, as delicate fabrics deserve delicate care.
